Program Description

Funded by Alameda County’s Every Child Counts (California First Five Commission), New Parent Support (NPS) offers parents and caregivers of newborns supportive services that focus on the health and mental health of the family.  Services include home visiting, counseling, lactation support, and a breast pump loan program.  The primary goal of the home visitation program is to provide support, information, and education to new parents to promote positive parenting, healthy child development and increased utilization of existing preventive health and social services.  In addition to support, the New Parent Groups provide post partum depression screening, psycho-educational information about parenting, lactation, infant development, post partum depression, child care, infant massage, community resources and making the transition from partnership to parenthood.  Throughout the year, NPS offers workshops on issues related to parenting children ages 0-5.

Eligibility

Families with newborns residing in the City of Alameda are eligible for home visitation from a lactation counselor or mental health provider.  Public Health Nurse visits are available to the City of Alameda residents who are first time parents or those who need extra support.  All groups and parent education programs held in the office are open to Alameda County families with newborns and children 0-5.
